Batik
I have learned many things from this project, probably the most important thing being that this is not something I would do voluntarily. This may sound harsh but I disliked everything about the process of making batiks. I disliked the smell of the wax and the way it would spill all over the fabric in places you didn't want it to be. I hated having to mix the dyes to get the color you wanted, since every time I tried this I would wind up with a color that wasn't even close to what I was looking for. I found waiting for the dye to dry rather torturous, since I would have to work on my other batik while I was waiting for my first one to dry. There was no opportunity for a break, and by the end of class I would have a headache.
Even though I really hated this project, I think it was good for me to do something that I didn't like. If I were to do the same thing day after day, I would probably grow to hate it, even if there was a time that I loved it. Also, it broadened my experience beyond the standard things taught in high school art class. It was nice to focus on something other than sketching and painting.
